The International Ice Sculpture Festival in Jelgava

The International Ice Sculpture Festival in Jelgava

Jelgava City invites you to experience the largest winter event in the Baltics – The International Ice Sculpture Festival, which will take place in the city for the nineteenth time. 32 professional sculptors from eight countrieswill create ice artworks on the Festival’s theme Carnival. Not only works of art for the competition will be created, but also various ice art objects – ice bar, demo sculptures and photo sculptures.

In the world, February is the time of carnivals, fun and celebration, which, in Latvia, you will enjoy the best in Jelgava where, from 10 to 12 February, the 19th International Ice Sculpture Festival themed Carnival will take place . The ice artwork will be created by 32 professional sculptors from eight countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, Turkey, Russia, Mongolia, Portugal and Ireland.

The artists will participate in the contest in two categories - individual sculpture and team-made sculpture. 45 contest sculptures will be made during the festival - 30 small (individual) and 15 big (team) sculptures, as well as various additional ice art objects – “Koskenkorva” ice bar, demo and photo sculptures;the tallest of them will reach 9 meters.

Every year the International Association of Snow and Ice Sculptures summarises the largest ice and snow sculpture festivals in the world. The name of Jelgava and Latvia has long been taking a stable position among leading countries in ice art such as China, Canada, Japan and Russia, in which ice and snow sculpting festivals have been organised and visited for many decades already.

Jelgava Ice Sculpture Festival has become the largest competition of its type in Northern Europe and the biggest ice sculpture exhibition in Baltic. The unique outdoor event is the main tourist destination in Latvia during winter, which gathers thousands of visitors not only from Latvia, but also from abroad.

The sculptors will arrive in Jelgava on 5 February and will create artwork until 10 February, while visitors will have the possibility to enjoy the carnival’s atmosphere and see the sculptures from 10 to 12 February.

Visitors can expect glowing sculptures and fireworks, as well as an extensive cultural and entertainment programme.

Friday, 10 February, the opening and awards ceremony will take place where the winners of the 19th International Ice Sculpture Festival will be announced, Roberto Meloni will perform and the main guest of the evening – the internationally renowned singer from Lithuania Ignas Pociūnas, better known as Daddy Was A Milkman

Saturday, 11 February, visitors will be entertained by the Lithuanian band The Roop and Lauris Reiniks, while, on Sunday, 12 February, on the stage of Pasta Island, the local indie rock band CARNIVAL YOUTH and JUSTS Sirmais will take the stage.

Both on Saturday and Sunday, the first half of the day will be devoted to the youngest visitors of the event – the Creative Association Pasaku Nams will offer a musical game show for children Talantu Meklējot, while Liepājas Travelling Circus Beztemata has prepared performances for children – Town Musicians of Bremen and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

During daylight hours, an ice workshop will be open where children and parents will have the opportunity to experience what it means to be an ice sculptor by trying ice carving.

On stage, on 11 and 12 February, there will be ice sculpture carving demonstrations – visitors will have the opportunity to see how ice blocks become fragile ice sculptures. Throughout the festival’s area various photo objects will be placed, such as crooked mirrors and a shadow frame. There will be not only entertainment for children but also for parents: Orbitron, archery, casting of tin, a carousel, inflatable attractions, etc. Visitors will be surprised by the 3D multimedia installation Mask Parade, which will take them travelling through various world carnivals.

Moreover, we invite guests to participate in creating the carnival atmosphere and wear masks themselves.

Tickets can be purchased at lower prices in advance until February 9 in “Biļešu Paradīze” sales points. Various discounts are available not only for scholars, students and pensioners, but also for families, as well as holders of Jelgava Scholar Card and Jelgava Resident Card.

The International Ice Sculpture Festival is organised by Jelgava City, with the support of IgateSEB bank and Ramirent.
