CHRISTOPHER CHRISTMAS

CHRISTOPHER CHRISTMAS

Do you know the feeling, when you’re getting ready for the biggest celebration of the year and you remember your list of New Years resolutions. Let’s see… those new sneakers are lying peacefully in the closet, a cake is taking up place in the fridge, and the craft collection is resting in the drawer… but don’t worry. Take a new page and write down what you did spontaneously. Did you visit any new places, teach a child to ride a bike, find your live, knit a warm scarf, or catch up with an old friend unexpectedly?… And how many more wonderful things weren’t even mentioned!
Which list gave you more joy?

In amongst all the things to do, the chores, the “I have to” and “I must”, remember to leave some space for the beauty of a spontaneous moment. Perhaps one of the Christopher’s Christmas concerts will be that moment, or a snow angel in a snow drift? Whatever the case may be, our greatest wish is to brighten up your celebrations with the most up-lifting emotions. Meanwhile, have you thought of your wish already?

Friday, December 4, 18:00

CUMBIA – PEARL OF THE CARRIBEAN SHORES

PARRANDA POLAR:
ADOMAS KORENIUKAS (vocals, accordion)
VYTAUTAS PUIDOKAS (bass guitar)
JONAS NARBUTAS (drums, percussion)

What can be better on a cold winter’s night that a hot cup of tea and a warm blanket? Why, the heat of the tropics and heart-warming rhythms, of course!

That’s exactly what the founder of the group Parranda Polar Adomas would tell you, having spent several years in South America, and fallen in love with cumbia. According to him, the traditional Columbian genre which sings about the love for woman, nature and work in the fields catches listeners in its spell, warming and joining different generations: “Hearing us play, Lithuanians become surprised and smile. It’s enough to see in someone’s eyes that they feel good, and from the slightly up-turned corner of their mouths, we know they’re hiding a smile in their pockets, and it becomes so much fun to play!

Let’s hope that the cumbia will become a heater for the spirit, save us from the cold, and we shall make sure that audiences are nice and warm at our concerts”.

Raise your sails, and get ready for a journey full of enchanting rhythms to South America!

Programme – original compositions, traditional cumbia songs from Peru and Columbia

Friday, December 11, 19:00
QUIVERS OF THE TANGO

Soloist VYTENIS DANIELIUS (accordion)
Vilnius City Municipality ST. CHRISTOPHER CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Conductor DONATAS KATKUS

An impressive musical palette – from dramatic stories to light flirting, from burning passion to alluring playfulness. Such is the multi-faceted facade of the tango that accordionist Vytenis Danielius will be presenting, together with the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra.

He will perform R. Galliano’s concerto Opale, a piece of truly rare beauty, immediately enslaving audiences for its sound – a combination of a new French musette and jazz improvisation with a tango heart. And how could we do without the genre’s masterpieces, ones which move our souls from the very first note?…

And when, following the concert, the sparkle in your eyes will reveal more than words can express, your heart will beat to the rhythms just heard, and your steps will be transformed into a temperamental dialogue, you’ll know that the magic of tango has enraptured you as well…

Programme – R. Galliano, A. Piazzolla, C. Gardel, etc.

Friday, December 18, 19:00
SYMPHONIC ROCK

An explosive device harnessing the energy of rock and the power of the orchestra – this is a concert that will change for all times your opinion about classical music.

The international team of four performers Dagamba is often titled as musical hooligans, because they don’t fit into the framework of any one genre, style or era. Their virtuosi combination of classical, rock and pop music is topped off with unexpected temperament and doses of humour.
Together with the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra, Dagamba promise lots of powerful sounds and such a dynamic and involving musical spectacle that before you know it, you’ll feel like a part of it all.

Programme – L. van Beethoven, S. Prokofjev, U2, Led Zeppelin, etc.

Sunday, December 27, 15:00
A MOONLESS NIGHT

LIUBA NAZARENKO (vocals, guitar)

As per tradition, on the occasion of the winter festive season, the owner of a velvety voice, Liuba Nazarenko, will greet you with the most beautiful assemblage of romances!

According to the singer, these songs, full of emotional melodies, were usually heard in cosy salons by candlelight, yet today they have emerged from their chamber surrounds and captured the hearts of concert hall audiences. And even though the times might be changing, the torment of love and longing remains the same…

And this brief festive break is an ideal opportunity to brush off the thick layer of everyday cares and concerns, and to set off on a winding journey along the path of romances!

Programme features late 19th – early 20th century city, salon, early and other romances.

Sunday, December 27, 18:00 and 20:30

ALL OF CHOPIN’S WALTZES

GINTARAS JANUŠEVIČIUS (piano)

How do you feel when you hear the sound of the waltz? Like grabbing your partner and swirling to the intoxicating rhythm, or do you sadly chide yourself for never taking those dancing lessons as a kid?… But here Gintaras Januševičius invites audiences simply to enjoy listening to this genre.

For the first time in Vilnius, the charismatic pianist will perform all nineteen of Chopin’s waltzes! The winner of Chopin competitions in Germany and Estonia, Januševičius stands out for his thirst for creative innovations: “I like telling interesting musical stories, showing off as yet unheard works or presenting well known pieces from an unexpected angle”, says the pianist. This is probably why elite concert halls are always full, and why music critics race one another to give the most fitting epithets – “the most musical of souls”, “a creature from another world”, “like an albatross”, “extraordinarily mature”…

What kind of story is hidden in the sounds of Chopin’s waltzes? Come and find out directly from the pianist at this concert.

Programme – all 19 of Chopin’s waltzes

Thursday, December 29, 19:00

However what is most impressive is that it unites people. Both performers and audiences become as if one family listening to these emotion-filled, memorable melodies.

This feeling is nothing new for these six young ladies who have formed the group Where The Backs Come From.

Each has taken her own musical path until the longing for gospel music (it gave them their beginning on the stage) could not be held back any more.
The sextet promises a high energy evening set to shake the vaulted ceilings of St Catherine’s Church: joyous hymns, a powerful instrumental group, famous guests and to top off the evening – the premiere of Jievaras Jasinski’s work!

FESTIVE MELODY CONFETTI

PAULIUS BAGDANAVIČIUS (tenor)
Vilnius City Municipality ST. CHRISTOPHER CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Conductor DONATAS KATKUS

The musical fireworks that will be set off by the owners of such charismatic and impressive vocals, together with the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra, are certainly worthy of the last night of 2015! Like colourful confetti, arias, one more beautiful than the next, will simply fly into the hall, Neapolitan songs, musical numbers – melodies we can never get enough of.

Laura Zigmantaitė and Paulius Bagdanavičius are two young singers who have amassed a solid, creative capital at international competitions, on television shows and in opera theatres. Barely having taken the stage, they immediately won the sympathies of professionals, and have enthralled audiences’ hearts, making each work they perform sparkle in all its beauty.

This concert is no exception. Get ready for a burst of musical energy and a New Year full of sincere emotions!
