Verkiai Regional Park is located in Vilnius, o the right bank of Neris River. Parks‘area is 2700 ha; 77percent of territory is covered by forests. The Park was founded in 1992 on a purpose to preserve the natural complex of Green lakes, and historical complexes of Verkiai, Kalvarijos, Trinapolis districts.
The deep valleys of Green lakes are unique complex of landscape. The water of Balsys Lake is exceptional because of its colour, and the finding places of broad-leaved forests and other rare plants are also detected in the mixed forests growing on the lake’s slopes. Forested slopes of Neries valley is not the only picturesque view here, Turniškių, Riešės, Verkės and Baltupio rivulet valleys are beautiful as well.
The green lakes lie in a very deep and long steep-sloped recesses. They have a very interesting quality of green colour. It is because of the vast amount of carbonates in the underground water, which feeds the lakes. Especially interesting is Balsio Lake, which steep and forested banks are 40 meters above, and analogically the same 40 m deep under water.
870 species of woody and herbaceous plants are detected here in the Park, 33 of which are included into Red Book of Lithuania. Near the Green Lakes 815 species of plants were detected as well. Here grows foreste lilly of exceptional beauty. There is an observatory spot for bird watching in ornithological path.
One of the most valuable in Lithuania is the architectural ensemble of Verkiai palace with Landscape Park and old ponds system. Proactive human activity in the Park is prohibited on the purpose to leave the nature untouched.
Leisure and entertainment
The Green lakes provide good opportunities for swimming and boating by the boats rented right in a place. It is recommended to take cognitive trips by walking on Green Lakes’ landscape reserve paths, Verkių ornithological path, path in Verkių Park and its ensembles’ surroundings, and unique path of Cross and its segments. The pond fishing is always being organised. You can ride horses of old stables of Verkiai by the time of events. In the middle of the park there is an artistically fenced viewpoint, the view of distant looming forests and vaguely appearing Vilnius roofs is breathtaking.
Green Lakes are very popular, hundreds and thousands of visitors arrive in the summertime.
