The area of Vištytis Regional Park is 10.1 thousand ha. It is in the south-western part of Lithuania, bordering Karaliaučius region on the west and Poland on the south.
The territory of the park includes Vištytis-Gražiškiai highlands (a part of Sudovian moraine highlands between lake Vištytis and Šešupė upper river old valley) western part. This is the highest place in Baltic Highlands within Lithuania. Vištytis highland formed in the times of the last ice age at the juncture of Middle and West Lithuania ice streams.
The Kylininkai moraine hills are especially remarkable for the expressiveness of relief, characteristic of hilly country which was the boundary of ice formations which were made of washed gravel rich soil.In the north it descends noticeably to the Sudovian plain.Kylininkai moraine hill relief has characteristic big steep hills. They are separated by noticeable depressions. The surface of the hills has smaller secondary forms.
The highest hills are located in the southern part of the park. These are adjacent hill tops looming almost in a line between the lakes Pakalnių and Dunajevo: Dunojaus hill (>285 m), Janauka (282.9 m), Pavištyčio hill (282.4 m), Staugūno hill (281.8 m) and Stankūnų hill (258.5 m) on the border with Poland. The lowest part in the park is the small lake Šakiai with the water level of 155.3 m. In the park territory the rise of the relief is 130 m. The border line between the river basins Nemunas and Prieglius goes through the territory of the park. The south-western part of the park territory (lake Vištytis with tributaries) belongs to Prieglius basin, while north-eastern part (Širvinta and its tributaries) belongs to the Nemunas basin.
There are 14 lakes in the park territory.
There are no big marshes in the park, however a lot of small swamps can be found in hollows untouched by land reclamation. The biggest is Paširvintis marsh (takes the area of 45 ha). Here is the source of Širvinta river in the marsh. The area of forests in Suvalkija and especially Vilkaviškis district is very small, despite that Vištytis Regional Park has huge forests, such as Vištytgiris, Drausgiris, Pavištytis forests. Also, upper marshes can be found here as well as transitory type bogs and lakes. A variety of reliefs and habitats is favourable for floristic and kenotic diversity.
A specific feature of Vištytis Regional Park is that oak woods take a large area, mixed with hornbeams, limes and spruce. Large areas of Pavištytis, Vištagiris and Tadarinės forests are occupied by spruce. Among archaeological landmarks are historical mounds and old settlements, as well as Vištytis stone. All these landmarks are cultural treasures of republican significance.
