The little Regional Park of Žagarė is diverse and interesting by its caps and other natural and cultural values formed by glacier. Žagarės Ozas is 8km length and by its shape winds as a snake. The caps of dolomites affected the rise of a special cherry spiece. The singularity and new traditions of this land cannot be imagined without „Žagarvyšnių“ cherry trees. Žagarė‘s manor with its huge park, red-brick buildings of the town, river Švėtė winding with the houses lined along the shore – all these unique features are singular valueas of the Park. Very rare plant Astrantia major grows here in this Park. The forest of Žagarė was made famous by royal stag.
Žagarė Regional Park is located in the South-eastern corner of the Žiemgala plain, where a moraine ridge of Linkuva stretches along, and in the rest of the park Žagarės – Skaistgirio ground moraines plain is located. The plain and wavy relief is diversified by the valley of Švėtė rivulet and two ridges.
The most expressive part of Linkuva ridge is Gaudikų crest. Another value of the Park is a spectacular Žagarė ridge of 8 km length. From the top you can see Švėtė valley, Žiemgalė plains and the view of district covered by forests. Žagarė district stands out by underground structure and diversity in relief shapes. Under the thin layer of moraine there are layers of dolomites counting millions of years, which can also be seen from the exposure of Žagarė.
Flora and Fauna
Astrantia major is a very rare plant and it can only be seen in this Park, in Švėtė valley and Žagarė forest. The Regional Park of Žagarė is widely known because of its rich population of royal stags. In Mūšos tyrelis and surrounded forests live wolves and lynxes. Also, rare moths are detected here, like swallowtail, brown Heath, lopinga achine, dark šaškytė.
More than 800 years of history dating back to Žagarė town with centuries of memory city streets intertwines different periods of cultural heritage. The most valuable here is the spirit of aristocracy which can be felt in the complex of Žagarė manor houses. The greatness of ancestors is reminded by mounds.
Exceptional phenomena, living traditions, historical facts and personalities
Layers of dolomite affected that Žagarė is famous by its own specie of cherry trees from time immemorial. Žagarė cannot be imagined without cherry-tree festival and scarecrows. An interesting event, which is slowly becoming a tradition, is feast of Northern Lithuanian filled dumplings made from ryes. One more attraction in Žagarė town is a unique „pot house“ under the name of E. Vaičiulis.
