Sartai Regional Park is located in North-eastern Lithuania, administration of Zarasai district, in Dusetos. The park itself occupies 12 107 ha. It was founded to preserve the landscape of Sartai Lake, which was shaped in a unique junction of valleys, its natural ecosystem and valkues of cultural heritage.
The Park has the unique fifth biggest lake in Lithuania Sartai, with 8 large branches and range of lakes merging in their sequels by linkups. The river Šventoji flows through the Park and Sartai Lake. The Park also has an interesting landscape of hills and ravines in central and eastern part. In the reserve of Vysna the oldest fir groves of Dusetos forest, swamps, and various habitations of rare species are being preserved. Anatazavė‘s pinewood communes are also highly valuable. Near the ponds of fishery one can observe local birds.
In the territory of Park, mounds of Valikuškių and Pakačinės reveal the ethno-cultural junction of Western and Eastern Highlanders, also a distinctive way of lining houses along the lakeshore. In the city of Dusetos there is still an extant church of 18th with its bell tower. The village of Rokėnai is a hometown of composer Juozas Gruodis, Gipėnai – poet’s Antanas Vienažindis summerhouse-museum. In Antazavė one can find an interesting 18th century church, manor and park.
Leisure and Entertainment
Sartai is famous with annual Horse race taking place on a frozen lake. Here are good conditions for swimming, fishing, cycling and walking. Water tourists can choose between 1 – 4 days routes. Accommodation is possible at camping sites or stationary resorts where one can also rent a boat. If you enter the Southern part of the lake, you can visit the mounds which are in the Eastern branch of the lake. Then 7-8 km long South-western branch along the Dusetos forest and back to Šventoji River. The Sartai Lake can also be reached through Kriauna River from Obeliai.
The directorate of Park full of lakes recommends swimming nearby camping sites and resorts. The best for windsurfing are Sartai and Zaduojis lakes. Camping sites are settled near Tautesnis, Zalvis and Sartai lakes.
