Daugai town is settled in South Lithuania, the territory of Alytus district municipality (22 km to the East from Alytus). This pearl of Dzūkija lies right in the centre of Daugų Lakeland, any way you turn – all the suburbs of Daugai end by the lake. Once upon a time Daugai was an island and only after the roads were built and the flooded meadows were poured, this territory became accessible by land. Not taking into account the smaller water pounds, the shores of Daugai are mainly being rinsed by Daugų Lake, which takes 912 ha, and common length of shores reaches 42 km! The lake formed because of the melting glaciers, which, in length of time, gained its unique shape – lakes which interrupts from both sides shapes the Daugų Lake into H letter. Until now, the big peninsula in the South-West of Daugai is still being called Sala (island in Lithuanian), and the one in South-East – Papiškio. All the coasts of Daugai Lake, except for peninsulas, are fully populated. Not counting the Daugai town, there are Doškonių, Andriūnų, Papiškių, Sokonių, Padaugės, Bukaučiškių and Dvarčėnų villages by the lakeside.
The town was settling in the hilliest Northern part of the former island. There is still one hill covered by the trees standing out in the oldest Western part of the town, being called Šventapetriu by the locals. Long time ago it was a mound, but later, in times of Grand Duke Vytautas (1393), it is said that the first church of Daugai was built on top of it. Nowadays (since 1991) only a high wooden cross with an angel which protects Daugai town on top (made by Stasys Mikalionis, Rytis Strimaitis and others) stands on it.
The old market square, which was renovated few years ago, can still be found in the centre of the town. Nowadays it is a place of family leisure: not only the playground for kids, outdoor fitness, garden but also a place for city events are installed here. This oldest part of the town having particular historical and cultural value gained the name of Lithuanian Urbanity’s monument dating back to 1969.
In the town which is famous with its touristic and recreational value, the level of culture is growing rapidly, which is why more and more people with various hobbies are coming to visit: well organised symposiums of painters, poet meetings and various gatherings are taking place in Daugai.
Today Daugai welcomes everyone who wants to spend their holidays perfectly. The town offers active and passive leisure, and various accommodation features allows staying not only for families but also for big groups of people. There are two professionally equipped beaches with kids’ playgrounds, changing cubicles, and volleyball and basketball sites. For those who like active leisure, many water attractions are being offered: water bikes, kayaking, Viking boating, rafting, and organized sightseeing tours by water or touristic walking trips visiting the most famous places of Daugai district. Friendly and welcoming locals (dzūkai) are always ready to welcome city guests!
