Lithuania

Dear Traveller,

You have a new book in your hands, introducing all Lithuanian resorts and resort areas for the first time. Body tempering, health improvement, the prevention of illnesses, treatment, and rehabilitation by applying natural factors for centuries is related to our resorts: Birštonas, Druskininkai, Neringa, and Palanga.

Already in 1587 there was a mineral water treatment facility operating in Lithuania. Druskininkai resort was established in 1838, and the first patients came to Birštonas in 1846. Palanga was famous for its climate and sea swimming from the beginning of the 19th century. Every resort in Lithuania is unique and specific:

Birštonas features mineral water used for treatment, and moor mud. Its history, and the unique landscape formed by the meanders of the Nemunas River, and tranquillity distinguishes Birštonas from other resorts;

Druskininkai features mineral water used for treatment, moor mud procedures, air suitable for treatment,the Wellness Park, unique attractions and places to visit;

Neringa, with its shores washed by the waters of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon, is exceptional with picturesque sand dunes, seashores and nature included in the list of heritage objects of UNESCO;

Palanga is unique because it was established on the shores of the Baltic Sea, where the air saturated with iodine complements the treatment qualities of mineral water and mud, helping to develop a full complex of healing factors widely applied for sanatorium treatment and wellness;

Anyksčiai and Ignalina resort areas are the centres of wellness, active leisure and tourism, fascinating visitors by the remarkable beauty of nature both in summer and in winter.

The book offers information on the geographic locations, history, and climate in the resorts and resort areas, about the places to visit, traditional cultural and sporting events, and natural treatment resources in a specific resort area or resort. It also offers information about institutions providing the services of resorts, treatments, spas and wellness, active leisure and entertainment, etc.

Wellness Springs resort

Druskininkai town is the gateway to Lithuania and, in the most explicit description of the geographic location of Druskininkai, is the largest resort in the south of the country. The resort celebrated its 210th anniversary four years ago, and since ancient times, it has been aplace famous for its treatment traditions and wonderful nature.

The first written source to mention Druskininkai is the Lithuanian Metrics. It writes that in1596, the village of Druskininkai was given to Voropajus, a manager of Pervalkas manor. The healingpower of sources was first verified by local rural residents. They noticed that after wadingthrough some surrounding springs, wounds on their legs began healing more completely.For this reason, in the 17th–19th centuries, smarter residents of Druskininkai began to “heal.” Inthe 18th century, the dynasty of folk doctors Sūručiai (Sūrmiečiai, Suraučiai) became especiallyfamous. However, Druskininkai became a real resort after the publicised analysis of the chemicalcomposition of mineral water of Druskininkai springs by I. Fonberg, a professor at VilniusUniversity, in 1835. After delivering data to the Russian Tsar Nicholas I, permission was obtainedin 1837 for the development of the Druskininkai resort, even though unofficially mineral andmud baths had already been operating since the beginning of the century.

Having been promoted at the resort for centuries, mineral waters and moor mud arenow combined with modern technologies and have a higher value in health and wellnessservices and in the subsequent promotion of the resort.

Currently, Druskininkai is known as a modern and specific international resort, providinghigh-quality wellness, tourism, recreation services, and ensuring high life quality standards.Now, the mineral water and moor mud that has been promoting the resort from ancient timeshas become a constituent part of the leisure and entertainment industry in Druskininkai.

Druskininkai is a unique place of nature located in the south of the country, full of greenery and encircled by a blue stripe of the Nemunas River and dense pine forests. It is the most southern spot of Lithuania, bordered by the Byelorussian border on the south, and the Polish border on the west. By car: Kaunas to Druskininkai 130 km, Vilnius to Druskininkai 130 km. By bus: International bus routes from the major Lithuanian cities and from the airports of Vilnius (www.vilnius-airport.lt), Kaunas

Climate

Mild continental climate and low temperature fluctuations are factorsthat are favourable for recreation and tourism. Average summerair temperature: +18.2º C, winter: -5º C, annual precipitation 600 mm,sunny days per year, up to 200; prevailing western winds of 2.09 m/s.Resort guests are attracted by the Raigardas valley chanted by legends,with impressive banks of the Nemunas River, rare plants andmysterious Švendubrė mycological stone.Near Druskininkai, there is a national park, exceptional for its uniquelandscapes of Dainava land: arrays of dunes, springs and cold rivers,their valleys, lake

s, mounds and hills.

History

Druskininkai history is closely related to the history of mineral watersin this territory. Even though Druskininkai was first mentionedin written sources in the beginning of the 17th century, the countryhas been inhabited since the Stone Age.On June 20, 1794, the Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of PolandStanislovas Augustas Poniatovskis by his decree announced Druskininkaia treatment area. Until that time, Druskininkai had beenconsidered an ordinary Lithuanian village.In 1837, a professor of Vilnius University, Ignatius Fonberg publicisedthe analysis of chemical composition of mineral water ofDruskininkai, and the Russian emperor Nicholas I approved theproject of a Druskinink

ai resort foundation.
From the middle of the 19th century up to the beginning of the 20thcentury, the resort flourished. Druskininkai was not only a place fortreatment with salty springs, mud, and kumis, but also a place ofentertainment; concerts, performances and dances were stagedhere. In 1924–1939, the doctor’s E. Levicka’s treatment facility (park)of sun, air and physical exercises was functioning in Druskininkai.However, fires, floods, occupations and wars left their mark. Thearchitecture was changing and new buildings replaced the destroyedones, therefore there is little left from the old town. Healingtraditions were changing as well. Only the serenity encircling Druskininkai survived.

Today, Druskininkai is a modern and characteristic internationalresort providing high-quality services of wellness, recreation andtourism, and is famous for its deep traditions of sanatorium treatmentand rap

idly developing tourism service infrastructure.

Pearl of the Nemunas bends!

The small and cosy Birštonas resort located at the Nemunas River is exclusive notonly to the Kaunas region, but to all of Lithuania. It is the only resort located in the middle ofthe country and is only 40 km south of the city of Kaunas. One of the oldest balneology resortsin Lithuania today, Birštonas offers various treatment packages. The resort history dates backto the 19th century, when they began using local mineral water and moor mud of Birštonasfor the treatment of various illnesses and conditions.Birštonas is famous for the oldest mineral water bottling company in Lithuania, whichbegan operating in 1924 when the drinking of Vytautas and Birutė mineral water was extremelypopular. The first mineral water was bottled in Kaunas, and in the seventh decade, thisindustry was moved to a small plant in Birštonas. However, you can still try a real Vytautas mineralwater at the resort, in the convalescent homes of Tulpė and Versmė.T he importance of mineral springs has been reflected in the coat of arms of the resort,which features a mythological whale with water spraying from his back.Birštonas is also famous as one of the cleanest Lithuanian cities. It does not have any bigindustries or transportation jams. The Nemunas River, encircling the town, has turned it intoa recreation area excellent for the mind and for the relaxation of the soul. In 2006, Birštonas’municipality was awarded a medal of “Auksinės krivūlės laureatas” in the nomination of thecleanest city for successfully dealing with waste disposal, water treatment and other environmentalproblems.

History

The history of Birštonas, one of the oldest balneology resorts inLithuania, dates back to medieval times. Prussian chronicler VygandasMarburgietis mentions in his New Chronicle of Prussia thatthe marshal Kuhn von Hottenstein in 1382, during his campaignto Lithuania, divided his army into three parts: one for assaultingPunia, one for assaulting Alytus and one for assaulting Birštonas. Inthe beginning of the 19th century, the historical researcher TeodorasNarbutas found in Königsberg archives about 20 descriptionsof crusader intelligence reports in Lithuania during the years 1384-1402, where a farmstead near salty water is called Birsten, Birstan;they also described a well-fortified wooden castle still on a steepshore of the Nemunas River.After the Žalgiris battle (Battle of Grunwald), when the crusaders’incursions ceased, Birštonas is mentioned as a hunting estate ofthe Lithuanian Grand Dukes, highly favoured by Vytautas the Great,Kazimieras Jogailaitis and sons, and Duchess Elena.The beginning of the establishment of the Birštonas resort coincidedwith the year 1846 when the doctor of the Stakliškės resort,Benediktas Balinskis, became interested in the Birštonas springswhen he sent a patient (who hadn’t been healed by the Stakliškėshealing springs) there. The patient was healed at Birštonas. Afterlengthy investigations and bureaucracy procedures, at the end of1854, the Russian Minister of the Interior gave permission for theBirštonas resort to be established. The first treatment facility wasbuilt already the next year, and in the sixth decade of the 19thcentury, Birštonas, as a balneology resort, was already well-knownthroughout the entire Russian empire.During the First World War, Birštonas was significantly destroyed andthe remaining buildings were sold out. The only resort of independentLithuania (Druskininkai was occupied by Poland at that time)faced the threat of complete deterioration, but the Lithuanian RedCross took an interest in it and in 1924, signed an agreement with theHealth Department and undertook the modernisation of the resortfollowed by the establishment of the mud baths, water supply, sewage,and electricity. The most significant event in the history of resortswas the beginning of mud treatments in Birštonas. Peat for thetreatment was supplied from the Druskupis rivulet, and later from theVelniabliūdis peat field. Mud treatment facilities were decorated withthe Red Cross emblem, were built in 1927 and are still functioning.With efforts from the Board of the Red Cross, they cleaned the parkand equipped the fountain and reservoirs with fresh and mineralwater on Vytautas hill. All of the hotels in the resort were equippedwith a water supply, sewerage and electricity. They organised shuttlebuses from Kaunas and Alytus. Villas and convalescent homeswere being built in Birštonas and the town was becoming increasinglybeautiful. They equipped the central city square, where in1939 a monument to J. Basanavičius was unveiled. The memory ofthe patriarch was eternalised and funded from public donations.In the sixth decade, the construction of new sanatorium complexesbegan. Sanatoriums “Tulpė”, “Spalis” and “Versmė” welcomedtheir visitors.
