Japanese garden is an integral part of the Japanese culture. For centuries it has been uniting religion, art and respect for nature.
For the first time in written sources Japanese garden was mentioned in the 8th century, Nara period (710-794) when Chinese influence was still very strong. As far as our roots are pagan, so for us Lithuanians, Japanese love and respect to all elements of nature will not be difficult to perceive.
The idea of the Japanese garden was chosen in order to reveal the mightiness of stones and the strength of the area. People of Samogitia are the last pagans in Europe. Shinto (“road of Gods”) is the most popular religion in Japan, so close to paganism, its object of worship is kami - nature and its objects (trees, mountains, stones, springs) or other phenomena. Everywhere Japanese tried to emphasize their uniqueness and only in the nature they strived to disappear. For Japanese there is nothing inanimate, thus a man as a living being does not become an exclusive creature, he is just one of the elements of nature. So, there can not be any hierarchy.
Japanese say: what is a human life in comparison with the life of tree? A tree according to its longevity and experience should be higher than a man. This idea is reflected in the Japanese gardens. However, everything here is indisputable unity, harmonious entirety.
Japanese believe: if someone intrudes into nature and attempts to change it, so this should be perfectly done, just raised to the heights of art. Perfect aesthetics and harmony reigns here.
Development of the garden, as the biggest (16 ha) Japanese garden in Europe, was started in 2007. The idea to found it came from a dream to show love for the nature of Samogitia and express gratitude to Motherland. When Teacher Hajime Watanabe heard about the idea, he took it as a challenge and started to implement it enthusiastically together with his team.
