Aquatic Warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola) is the only globally threatened passerine bird found in mainland Europe. Lithuania and Latvia currently are among eight countries worldwide with suitable breeding habitats for this rare species. From 2011 it is breeding only in Belarus, Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania. In 2012 63-64 singing males were found in Lithuania, while meadowns in Latvia remained silent.In 2012 and 2013 population decreased even more. In 2013 only 50 singing males were counted in Lithuania. The number of Aquatic Warblers is also decline in whole Europe.

Aquatic Warbler is a habitat specialist occurring mainly in open sedge fen mires and marshy habitats. Today it is facing extinction due to an increasingly abandoned farmland or transformation of meadows into a grazing land. Therefore its conservation is closely linked to sustainable farming practices.

Video recording of the Aquatic Warbler in Nemunas River Delta in 2012.

95%

This much of the global Aquatic Warbler populations has gone extinct over the past century. This is mainly due to the destruction of wet and open sedge fen mires and marchy habitats.

8 countries

This many countries are left worldwide with suitable breeding habitats for the Aquatic Warbler. Lithuania and Latvia are among them along with Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Hungary and Belarus.

4 months

This is how much time this species is spending in Lithuania: arriving in May and taking off back to Africa at the end of August.

10 grams

This is how much this tiny threatened passerine weighs.

2001

It was not until a decade ago  when it was discovered that Aquatic Warbler is wintering in the Senegal River Delta in Western Africa. However, two thirds of its wintering sites remain still unknown.

50 males

Scientists are counting singing males when monitoring this bird. This many singing males were registered in Lithuania in 2013.

30 meters

This is the farthest that females go from the nest to feed.

16 days

Ths is how much time the caring mother of the Aquatic Warbler is looking after its offspring - the longest of all warblers. The bird lays 3 to 6 eggs.

Tulkiaragė paths: story created by nature and farmer

The paths tells unique story of Tulkiaragė, that was created by water and human. From the very beggining of this territory formation (400 years ago), human found his place here: he built dykes and polder system; mowed and took care of meadows. Once affected, Tulkiaragė ecosystem became depended from human. Only with his existence, huge variety of species can flourish here. Of course, the following circumstances are not less important: what kind of people will farm here; what relationship with nature they will have and how this perception will reflect in their actions.

We invite you to read the story of Tulkiaragė usign all your senses while walking the path. Move stands, take a look on horse shoe, bravely, talk with Great Bittern using bottle and dream about something beutiful on Dreamers bench.

The bigest Aquatic Warbler in the world settled down in Tulkiaragė nature path. This globally threatened bird in a form of artistic painting alighted on reconstructed pumping station, which now functions as bird watching tower and living nature school.

The length of the paths is 1,2 km to one side. It goes along the dyke.

„This paths is symbolic thanks for farmers who runs their activities in nature friendly way do not afraid ofsome difficulties and inconveniences,“- says Rita Norvaišaitė, the creator of Tulkiaragė path.

One of the most beautiful Lithuania mound can be seen in Seredzius, on the road going by the Nemunas River. Its site is almost triangle shape, 50x35 m. size, whereas a 7 meters high mound is mounded on the eastern side. The mount is near the confluence of the Nemunas and Dubysa Rivers, which in the beginning of the 16th century has been associated with the settling place of legendary duke of Lithuania Palemonas. This is the reason why this mound has been named - Palemonas mountain since the 18th century. The true story of this mound is related to Piestve castle, which was mention for the first time in 1293, when the crusaders were attacking Veliuona (Jungeda) and Piestve castles. Piestve was the second castle after the Veliuona which was on the defense line by the lower reaches of the Nemunas River; therefore the attacks of Piestve castle were often combined with the attacks of Veliuona castle. The regiments of crusaders have attacked in 1294, 1298, 1318, 1319, 1322, 1345, 1348, 1357, 1362. Sometimes the crusaders destroyed only the neighborhoods, and sometimes burnt the lower ward. When crusaders have destroyed the New Kaunas castle in 1363, at the same time they have destroyed Piestve castle too. The castle was rebuilt in 1412 together with Veliuona castle. However after the peace contract of Meln (1422) the castle lost its importance and was desolated.

Floods of Pamarys region usually starts in spring, when the largest Lithuanian river Nemunas overflows from coast. Flood submerges about 50 km of roads. Spring floods are typical only for this region. Flood in Šilutė region usually submerges about 14 000 hectares of territory. Rarely flood happens in winter or autumn. In spring floods often flood a large part of Pamarys regions meadows. During the spring flood in 2 months 2/5 of Nemunas annual outflow flows in to Curonian Lagoon. Nemunas on the average carries 700m ³ of water, and increases his outflow 12 times.
In most cases, the flood floods Šlažai and Žalgiriai rural surroundings, and fully floods Žalgiriai forest. 2004, held the biggest flood, it submerged a territory of 5000 ha. Overflowing water destroys embankments, floods villages, rips roads, quays, and fills good soil with silt. Every year floods brings a lot of damage. Residents of the flooded areas and government attempts to deal with the water element. Embankments are raised and new ones are poured, banks of the river are strengthened. Before the beginning of the ice-drift in Nemunas lowlands, willing to prevent ice jam, icebreaker is launched. Sometimes people try to dust peat on ice. Aviation aircraft flies above the flooded areas of Šilutė and in their assistance many people were saved from the flood. The other problem is that Nemunas is not deepened.
In most cases, the flood floods Šilutė - Rusnė road. The depth depends from the rainfall that why it is so different every time. When the water on the road reaches 25 cm, the road becomes unusable. Then the cars to Rusnė are transported by a special trawl. In 1997, water depth on the road was 1.4m. It was impossible to reach Rusnė.
During the flood in Nemunas floating ice and overflowing water puts homesteads, birds, swans and gooses in a great danger and the view in Šilutė region is impressive.
When Nemunas water spills widely Rusnė town gets cut off from the rest of the world. Therefore, for those who wish to reach it has to go on a trawl drawn by tractor. Spring floods are a trivial round for local residents. The fact is that this location is 1.5 m above Curonian Lagoon annually suffers from it. During the time of spring floods waters of the Nemunas raises nearly 3 m above sea level. Already in the nineteenth century polders were installed – lowlands drained and separated by banks. However, such natural disaster which floods road, meadows, farmsteads, and flowing ice leaves an inerasable memories for people who haven’t seen anything like it. First bank that was ever made in Nemunas lowlands was built in 1840 in Rusnė, and the first water pump station was built in Uostadvaris in 1907. Nemunas Delta Regional Park owns 21 polders, but generally what keeps people from flood is polderic system with 39 pump-houses.
Floods are a common phenomenon for Pamarys region and now it is not only a bad phenomenon for local residents. People gladly agree to share this natural misfortune, with others who only know this element from the books.
Every year flood brings a lot of damage. Residents of the flooded areas and government attempts to deal with the water element. Embankments are raised and new ones are poured, banks of the river are strengthened. Before the beginning of the ice-drift in Nemunas lowlands, willing to prevent ice jam, icebreaker is launched. Military helps by blowing up ice jams. Aviation aircraft flies above the flooded areas of Šilutė and in their assistance many people were saved from the flood. The ancient people of this region knew how to prepare for the flood. Each farm had a tied boat. Food and fodder were stored in safe places. Animals and the whole barn were built on higher place so that the water couldn’t reach them, and they were flooded only then when there was massive flood. Around the roads and farmsteads people planted water-proof and fast-growing willows, so that when the area is flooded people could see the road and the ice wouldn’t destroy their houses.
In most cases, flood occurs because of the ice stoppage in Nemunas channel and then abundance of water spills in to meadows, and quickly flooding large areas. And mostly it happens at night.
The main ice jams are at the bridges and the river bends, i.e. near Rambynas Mountain, under Tilžė bridges, in Ragininkai Island, in Šilininkai village, under Rusnė Bridge and Šyškrantė village.
Another factor leading to sudden water raise - a strong and long-term north-west – from west direction blowing wind, which gathers water from the sea into the lagoon, and from them to Nemunas.
Fire and Rescue Services in Šilutė has the most work during the time of the flood. They have to do specific tasks such as rescue people and their property. Therefore this service has well prepared teams who have the skill to rescue people from the water. People and their property are evacuated from their houses by the amphibian. It helps urgently transport medics to the flood zone when there is a need, because medics can not reach those places by their own transportation. Due to flooded roads and interruption of bus routes they are replaced by rescue terrain vehicle.
Veliuona castle was built in 1291, and has been the most important advanced post in the war with the crusaders for 76 years (until 1367). After the fall of Veliuona castle, crusaders have temporarily occupied the region, however Vytautas have rebuilt Veliuona castle and have defended the rights of Lithuania to have this territory after the Zalgiris battle in 1412.
